Bird's - Inhabitants of Ka‘ūpūlehu
A goal of our Natural Resource Department is to mālama the land (‘āina) and the ocean and share what we are doing with other resorts and communities. Over the years an inventory of shorebirds and waterbirds has been conducted of species that visit and inhabit the pond areas. Endangered species that have flown to Waiakauhi and Pūnāwai and have become resident birds include the ‘alae, ke‘oke‘o, koloa maoli, ae‘o, ‘auku‘u and from Kona Village the nēnē. During the fall and winter migration period migratory ducks and shorebirds visit the resort which includes koloa mapu, koloa moha, lesser scaup, ‘akekeke hunakai, kioea, kōlea, and the ‘ūlili. The resort continues to protect and encourage a healthy native bird population. Since the restoration of Waiakauhi fishpond at Hualalai Resort, over 45 ae'o Hawaiian Stilts have fledged to adulthood, and will continue to provide critical habitat for this endangered species to grow.
