Voyages at Hualālai

The Voyage

To the Polynesians of old, the ocean was the road to discovery. The canoe was the voyager's world, the horizon his destination. His map lay above, below, before and around him, in the stars, clouds, winds, tides, and waves, and in the fiery movement of the sun. The elements charted his course. The voyager spoke their language. Reading the signs around him, he sailed his canoe ever forward, propelled by curiosity, thirsty for discovery.

Like the Polynesian adventurers, you now face an exciting new experience: Hualālai Resort at Historic Ka‘ūpūlehu. This once-stark lava field is today a modern destination renowned for its power to renew. "VOYAGES" is your personal guide to the activities and programs of Hualālai Resort.

Wind & Wave

To the Polynesian voyager, the ocean was a source of life. It brought recreation, food, discovery, knowledge and unspeakable joy. The voyager learned from the ocean and honored its gods with appreciation and respect.

The Alaka‘i Nalu of Hualālai Resort live these values and perpetuate them daily as stewards of the ocean. They share their passion in Wind and Wave, the element that explores the ocean and its many offerings.

The Ultimate Alaka‘i Nalu Adventure is a voyager's dream: a private tour of the Ka‘ūpūlehu coast by canoe or Ribcraft for groups or families. You can paddle, Boogie-board, snorkel or look for whales and dolphins. When you turn your head mauka, the views of Hualālai and Maunakea from the ocean will take your breath away.

Along the shore, marine life thrives in the tide pools. Children, tweens and teens can become Ocean Life Explorers and collect tiny fish and organisms from an educational touch tank.

The Hawaiians were also masters of fishing and the ‘Opelu Koa Fishing Project honors that tradition. From catching the ‘opae‘ula bait to releasing them to attract the mackerel. The ‘Opelu Koa Project is all about fun and skill.

Test your skill or learn a skill, it's all about the journey.

Mauka to Makai

Life on the ahupua‘a (a land division extending from the mountain to the sea) depended a lot on the many trails that led from Mauka to Makai (mountain to ocean). This was how Hawaiians supported life by using the rich foliage from the mountains to adorn themselves and build their homes and nourish their families with food from the ocean. These gifts from the ‘āina (land) maintained their lifestyle.

Come to the Ka‘ūpūlehu Cultural Center and learn about the life style that sustained the Hawaiian people. You will have the opportunity to learn skills which helped them survive in traditional Hawai‘i and are still practiced today.

Feather art, ‘ukulele lessons, hula lessons and learning the Hawaiian language are only a few of the many arts of the Hawaiian culture that are available to guests of Hualālai Resort.

Sky & Mountain

To the voyager, the mountain first appears as a tiny speck on the horizon, the intersection of sky and earth. Closer, it becomes an island, and closer still, a mountain. The bay, beach and sand become landfall, and a new voyage begins.

Today, the mountain named Hualālai adds new dimensions to the joys of exploration. Named after the wife of the mariner Hawai‘i loa, Hualālai is ground, backdrop, summit, and muse for imaginative resort activities.

Above the ground, the Big Island Zipline gives wings to the voyager's spirit on the other side of the mountain. Hikers blaze trails and mountain bikers ride them. Volcanic cinder crunches below. Puhiapele, the volcanic spatter cone that reshaped the delta below, is a sacred presence, its chiseled lava profile a landmark of the mauka lands.

By night, the stars are the eyes of the universe, brighter here than anywhere else. The adjacent mountain, Maunakea, has the most powerful telescopes in the world for viewing the same clear skies that crown Hualālai.

Sky and Mountain are the portal to the lofty heights of the island. The views are sublime, the silence grand. Once red with eruption and fire, the mauka lands are fertile soil for respectful exploration. Journey to the uplands with us.
